<image:title>Blog - Running Injury - Lots of running injuries coming through the doors at the moment. Must be the fine weather! There are so many risk factors that contribute to injury in runners. Most people with weak muscles, poor technique and not great form can usually get away with running 5-10km distances I find. The recreational runner who runs 15-30km a week will usually be fine. The injuries however start to ramp up I find once the distance starts going towards half marathon and marathon distance. This tends to be because the repetiveness of running this distance means there is no where to hide. Strength and conditioning needs to be a part of your running training plan if you are going longer. Check yourself out, is your single leg hop distance similar on both sides? Can you go up on your toes using only one foot 20-30 times, and is it the same both sides? Do you lunge with a similar technique on both sides if you watch yourself in the mirror or is one side really wobbly? Another huge factor is too much too soon. Increased distance has to be done slowly. And if you have taken 2+ weeks off you have to go back before you can go forward. Tendons HAAATE working hard again after a rest! Especially as you get older. So things you were doing 5 years that were fine might not be now. Running form, running shoes, running same course every day, not enough rest days.....we could go on and on regarding risk. But for today, if you're a runner and are increasing the distance: -do it slowly - consider adding some strength training a couple of days a week and enjoy!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Hip Pain - Cocooning and lockdown have a lot to answer for! Immobility and reduced mobility that have come hand in hand with this awful Covid virus have had devastating impacts on increasing fragility in our older populations. One body structure that reacts really badly to reduced mobility is our tendons. A tendon is how a muscle connects to bone. They need to be constantly loaded to stay strong. Following a period of reduced movements it is really common to see our tendons get overloaded by what used to be normal for us. In the leg, common examples of this would be heel (achilles) pain and lateral or outside of hip pain. So if you or your mum or granny or uncle are suddenly complaining of a stiff, achy hip dont just presume its arthritis. It's really possible it is a tendinopathy or a tendon suddenly finding what used to be normal as too much. This side of the hip pain is particularly prevalent in post menopausal woman, so bear that in mind too. Tendons unfortunately do not get better with time, or massage, or machines. They need a guided rehab program under a knowledgeable professional. So dont just ask the pain as getting older, get assessed and hopefully sorted!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - STOP RIGHT NOW… - Do you really know your health professional? When I see questionable exercise programs, patients are often unaware of what qualifications the person that prescribed it had. Chartered Physiotherapists all have 3-4 years of a college degree. Me: hi I'm I'm Riona, I have 4 years undergraduate training (1:1 Physiotherapy Degree from Trinity), 2 further years studying for a Masters Degree in Musculoskeletal Medicine and numerous post graduate diploma and certificate courses completed ( Diploma in Advanced Physiotherapy Practise, Diploma in Orthopaedic Medicine, Cerrificate in Spinal Manual Therapy....) I have spent well into the 5 digits on post graduate learning. I won the Cyriax Research Award in 2013 for my research into neck and shoulder pain I spend at least 3-4 EVERY WEEK looking through recent publications, up to date physiotherapy podcasts and am currently still engaged in research into shoulder pain with UCC. DOES YOUR "Physio" invest into getting keeping up to date regularly? What are their exact credentials? Please don't accept anything that isnt good enough</image:title>
